It was 22-degrees and frosty this morning when I got up around 7:30. This is one of the coldest Decembers I can remember here in Northern California.  I think the last time I went through temperatures like this was in 1988!  Anyway, here is what some of the leaves in the yard looked like…

Oh, and I started working on my calendar for next year.  In January I’m guiding the Fungus Crawl for Tuleyome on the 4th, and in April I’m doing the Butterfly Crawl.  I’m also going to try to do a special outing each month next year, and here’s what I have planned so far:

February 1st: Heritage Oak Winery Field Trip (Lunch & Wine Tasting Included), part of the 7th Annual Galt Winter Bird Festival through the City of Galt, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM

March 1st:  Gyotaku, the Japanese Art of Fish Printing through the Yolo Basin Foundation.  We’re supposed to learn about traditional fish printing techniques practiced by Japanese fishermen to record their catch. Fish biologist Chris Dewees has been a devotee of gyotaku since his grad student days in the 60s and has gained worldwide recognition for his talents with shows all over the globe. Spend a morning with the master! Chris will provide all materials including the fish. Lunch will be provided. 9:00 am – 2:00 pm

In May, I’m going on a Wildflower Excursion with Dr. Glen Holstein as part of Tuleyome’s public events.  The details haven’t been released yet, but it’s supposed to be an easy driving/walking tour.

June 21st:  Hawks of Summer through the Yolo Basin Foundation.  We’ll travel with raptor expert Jim Estep to the nesting and foraging sites of the Swainson’s Hawk, a CA threatened species which makes its summer home in Yolo County. Just when we’re getting a little tired and hungry the group will stop for lunch at a lovely country home in rural Yolo County, 7:00 am – 2:00 pm.

Let me know if there are other outings in or around Sacramento and Yolo County that sound interesting to you that I might be able to add to my list.
