This is a road near the city of Woodland, CA, which runs parallel to the I5 freeway. Between the exit off the freeway near the Sacramento River and Road 102, Road 22 abuts agricultural land. There’s a and there’s a slough that runs along one side of it (with rice fields on the other), and there’s usually water in that slough which feeds some wildlife as well as a variety of plants and insects (even in the summer).

Usually around here you can see a variety of birds including egrets and heron feeding in the water, Western Kingbirds, Brown-Headed Cowbirds, finches and swallows.
The roadside shrubbery included tules and cattails, wild roses, buttonbush, willows, buckwheat, wild licorice, boxelder trees and others. You can often find colonies of large orb-weaver spiders here and galls on the willows and rose bushes.
It’s a microcosm there: lots to see in a very small space, but you need to take your time and really LOOK at everything.
How to Get There:
- From Sacramento:
- Take Interstate 5 (I-5) North toward Woodland
- Take EXIT 531
- Turn LEFT onto Road 22
