Lake County Walkabouts
The “Sergeant Margie” dog-face beside an entry means the place is dog-friendly (you can take your leashed dog there).
Highland Springs Recreation Area, Highland Springs Reservoir (in Lakeport, CA): I had a chance to go here with a friend to participate in the Earth Day Trail Repair Kick-off picnic with the Highland Springs Trails Volunteer group and the Lake County Horse Council in April of 2013. Lots a trails to walk (some of them difficult, but a lot of them are easy enough for this old bird); the place is dog-friendly; lots of shade if you need it; adequate parking and a large restroom facility (near the Frisbee-Golf course lawn). Poison oak is an issue here so take some preventative/curative along with you. The best time to see this area is in the Spring and Fall. During the summer it’s baking hot, and during the winter months it can be closed (to preserve trails during the rainy season). In the Spring, too, you get some truly spectacular views of wildflowers all along the way to the park!
